Turbocharger Maintenance

A turbo power booster’s purpose is to increase your engine’s power by increasing the horsepower. A turbocharger spins at speeds of up to 150,000 rotations per minute (rpm) making it very important that you maintain the turbo in good working condition. Signs that may indicate turbo problems are changes in the working of the engine like loss of power or the fuel efficiency of the engine. Other indicators of a damaged turbo include loss of boost pressure, turbo noise, increased oil consumption and oil fouled spark plugs, or excessive exhaust smoking on diesel engines. It is important to observe the vacuum/boost gauge or boost indicator light but other issues can cause the same problems. If these problems surface the working condition of the turbo needs to be checked. The problem, of course, is figuring out when it's the turbo and when it's something else. Diagnosing a weak turbo should be left to a skilled mechanic that has turbo repair experience.

Turbocharger balance is a must

Is your concern that the turbo shows low or no boost? If so, your next mission is to find out the cause. The number one issue found is bad shaft bearings resulting in rubbing or binding between the compressor and turbine wheels and the units housings. Excessive play in the shaft bearings will result in a wobble allowing the wheels to scratch against their housing. This additional friction prevents the turbo from spooling as it needs to, reducing the turbo speed and operative boost performance. To check if this is indeed the problem, remove the intake or exhaust from the turbo. This will allow you a view of the turbo internal moving components. Any scraping on either the turbo blades or the housing means the bearings are shot and the turbo needs to be replaced or rebuilt. You also spin the turbo with your fingers to feel for any unevenness or binding. This is the easiest and fastest way to determine if the shaft doesn't turn freely and if not repairs are needed.

Problems that also indicate repairs are needed are cracks and or nicks in the turbo wheel blades. A turbocharger is electronically balanced to very high specs and any damage to the blade will knock the assembly out of balance. Even a slight change in the turbo balance, even if the blade moves freely, will prevent maximum rpm and over time will cause damage to the shaft bearing. If this is left uncorrected rebalancing will be impossible and the damaged parts will need to be replaced.
